Choose an Available Recording Device
For a voice note, interview or narration, select your microphone in Free Sound Recorder. For an external audio source, connect it through an appropriate recording interface or an input that Windows exposes to the app. The software cannot add a missing hardware input.

Prepare the Sound Before Recording
Place a microphone where your voice is clear without speaking directly into it at very close range. Keep its position consistent while making a test. Check that the intended device is enabled and that microphone access is available in Windows when required.
Speak at the level you expect to use during the full recording. Watch the app’s meter and adjust the source level before starting. If the loudest phrases distort, lowering the listening volume afterward will not undo the distortion that was recorded.
Make a Test You Can Trust
Record a few sentences, stop and listen through headphones. Check for room noise, interruptions and an unexpectedly distant voice. If the wrong microphone was selected, change the device and repeat the test before committing to a longer take.
You can record the microphone and computer playback together on separate tracks. Use this when you need commentary with computer audio. Headphones help keep playback from re-entering through the microphone.
Record and Keep a Finished Copy
Start the full recording when the test is useful. Leave a small pause at the beginning and end so you can review the boundaries. Stop, listen and export a file with a clear name.
